Zaheer Khan Appointed Head Coach of CSK for IPL 2027
Chennai Super Kings have turned to one of India’s great left-arm quicks to lead them into a new chapter, confirming Zaheer Khan as head coach for IPL 2027 and drawing a firm line under the Stephen Fleming era.
Fleming’s departure, after an extraordinary 18-year association with the franchise, always promised to be seismic. He was more than a coach; he was part of CSK’s identity, guiding them through titles, comebacks, suspensions, and rebuilds before stepping away to take up a role with England cricket. In July, he was appointed their men’s Test head coach, a move that underlined his standing in the global game.
Now, the whistle passes to Zaheer.
A new face, a familiar foe
For years, Zaheer Khan was the man CSK batsmen had to solve. He played 100 IPL matches across Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, collecting 102 wickets at 27.27, often with the new ball in hand and the game’s tempo in his control. Before that, his India career had already cemented him as one of the country’s finest fast bowlers, with 610 wickets across formats.
He knows pressure. He knows expectation. And he knows CSK from the other side of the contest.
"It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL," Zaheer said in the club’s announcement. He spoke of his battles against CSK and the noise at Chepauk, calling the atmosphere created by the “Superfans” something special. His closing line carried the intent of a man stepping into a big job with eyes open: he “can’t wait” to join a legacy franchise with such a rich history.
From the dugout to the boardroom, and back
Zaheer’s appointment is not a leap of faith on a retired great with no experience. Since bowing out of the IPL in 2017, he has steadily built a coaching and management résumé that fits the modern T20 ecosystem.
After his playing stints with RCB, MI and DC, he moved into the Mumbai Indians think tank, first as Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019. There, he worked inside one of the league’s most sophisticated setups, before shifting into the role of head of global development for the franchise’s wider cricketing network.
Most recently, he stepped into a more hands-on role again as Lucknow Super Giants’ mentor for IPL 2025. His time there was brief; he exited the franchise ahead of the following season. But it reinforced the perception of Zaheer as a specialist in nurturing fast bowlers and shaping bowling strategies in a format that moves at breakneck speed.
CSK, long known for experience, stability and method, have now tapped into that expertise.
CSK hierarchy backs a “cricketing brain”
The endorsement from the top at Chennai was emphatic.
“We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings,” said owner Rupa Gurunath. She highlighted his “distinguished playing career” and his “proven ability to nurture young talent” as reasons CSK believe he will strengthen the core of the franchise. This is a club that has always prided itself on continuity and clarity; choosing Zaheer signals a desire to refresh without losing that spine.
Managing Director KS Viswanathan went a step further, framing Zaheer not just as a former star but as an architect of India’s success in the 2000s. “Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years,” he said. He called him one of the “finest cricketing brains” and spoke of welcoming him into the CSK family.
Those are strong words. They also hint at what CSK want this next phase to look like: a side with its usual tactical discipline, but with a sharper, perhaps more aggressive fast-bowling edge.
Life after Fleming
Replacing Stephen Fleming is not a routine handover. He was there when CSK lifted trophies, when they rebuilt after suspension, when they were written off as old and slow and then came back to win again. His calm presence and close bond with MS Dhoni shaped an era.
Zaheer walks into that legacy, not away from it.
He inherits a fanbase that expects playoffs as a minimum, titles as a realistic aim, and style as non-negotiable. He also takes charge at a time when the IPL is evolving fast: younger squads, more data, more global influences, and a constant churn of tactics.
For CSK, this is the gamble: can a former spearhead of India’s attack, with front-office experience and a growing coaching portfolio, translate his feel for the game into a new kind of dominance from the dugout?
