Usama Mir Returns to Worcestershire for County Championship Run-In

Worcestershire have turned to a familiar face for the decisive stretch of their County Championship campaign, re-signing Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir for the remainder of the season.

Mir, who made his first-class debut for the Pears in 2023, comes in as a replacement for all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel and will be available for the club’s final three Division Two fixtures, starting with Tuesday’s home clash against Northamptonshire.

It is a move rooted in trust as much as necessity. Mir has already been part of the New Road dressing room this year, featuring in white-ball cricket after agreeing a three-year T20 deal earlier in the season. That agreement will eventually see him classed as a ‘local’ player from 2027, underlining how firmly Worcestershire have nailed their colours to his mast.

For now, though, the priority is red-ball impact. With the Championship schedule offering little breathing space, Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson admitted they had to move quickly once Swanepoel’s absence was confirmed.

“Usama is someone we know very well and is a high-class operator who will bring plenty of experience to our side for the final three County Championship matches,” Richardson told the club website. “Given the short turnaround we had to act swiftly to find a replacement, so to be able to add him to the squad before Tuesday is a real boost for us.”

Mir’s return gives Worcestershire a proven attacking option at a pivotal moment, a leg-spinner trusted by the club and already embedded in its plans far beyond this season. The final three games will show just how much that faith can shape their Division Two finish.
