Surrey Sign Nathan Sowter on Multi-Year Deal

Surrey have moved early to bolster their white-ball armoury, securing Durham and England Lions leg-spinner Nathan Sowter on a multi-year contract from 2027.

It is not a signing out of the blue. The Australian-born 33-year-old knows every corner of the Kia Oval, having sent down his leg-breaks there for the past five seasons of The Hundred with Oval Invincibles and MI London. Now he returns not as a short-term franchise hand, but as a fully-fledged Surrey cricketer.

“When the opportunity to move to Surrey came up, it made sense for me and my family,” Sowter told Surrey’s website. “Club cricket in the county gave me my shot at professional cricket, so it is nice to return as a Surrey cricketer.”

That route back matters. Sowter’s professional journey began in 2015 with Middlesex, off the back of standout performances for Normandy, the Surrey-based club who first gave him a platform. From there he carved out a reputation as a clever, combative T20 operator, eventually moving north to Durham in 2022.

The numbers back up the reputation. Across his career he has taken 196 wickets in 195 T20 matches, a near-wicket-a-game return built in domestic competitions and on the road, with stints in the Caribbean Premier League and the International League T20 (ILT20) sharpening his skills in very different conditions.

Surrey have not disclosed the exact length of the agreement, describing it only as a “multi-year deal”, but the intent is clear: lock in an experienced, battle-tested spinner who understands both the Oval’s dimensions and the rhythms of modern white-ball cricket.

He will not arrive until the 2027 season. When he does, he will walk into a ground that helped launch his career, this time with the ball in his hand and a long-term role to play in Surrey’s push for more white-ball silverware.
