Seren Smale Returns to Glamorgan: A New Era for Welsh Cricket

Glamorgan have brought one of their own home, and done it with a statement of intent.

Wrexham-born wicketkeeper‑batter Seren Smale has signed from Lancashire, joining a Glamorgan set‑up gearing up for life as a Tier One side from 2027. For a club mapping out the future of women’s cricket in Wales, this is a flagship move.

“Being Welsh and being able to represent Glamorgan professionally brings me so much excitement,” Smale said. “It's where I started my cricket journey and I can't wait to see what this next chapter brings.”

At 21, Smale already carries serious pedigree. She has two T20 internationals for England on her record and featured for the national Under‑19s at the 2022 ICC Women's U19 T20 World Cup. Her pathway began at Buckley Cricket Club, before she became a regular for Thunder between 2021 and 2024, learning her trade in the pressure of regional cricket and The Hundred.

Now she returns across the border with a clear brief: help anchor Glamorgan’s rise.

A key signing for a new era

Inside the club, this was no opportunistic swoop. Glamorgan's head of women and girls cricket, Aimee Rees, made it clear Smale had been high on their list for some time.

“We're absolutely delighted to have Seren join Glamorgan for the next three years,” Rees said. “She is incredibly proud to be Welsh, and she was someone we identified early as a key target for our recruitment strategy.”

The plan is already in motion. Smale will link up with her new teammates later this year for pre‑season, building towards that landmark 2027 campaign when Glamorgan step into Tier One status. The timing is deliberate: give a young international‑level keeper‑batter a runway to grow with the project, not just arrive when it’s already built.

Rees knows exactly what she’s getting.

“She brings real quality and valuable experience to our squad, with experience in The Hundred and at international level. We know she will make a big impact, and we're excited to see her continue to develop and perform on the biggest stages in a Glamorgan shirt.”

Building a Welsh core

Smale’s arrival doesn’t stand alone. It drops into a broader, accelerating shift within the club.

Batter Bethan Gammon, 25 and from Pontypridd, has already joined Glamorgan’s professional ranks. Alongside her, all‑rounder Bethan Ellis and batter/wicketkeeper Abbey Freeborn have turned their loan spells from Warwickshire over the last two seasons into full contracts with the Welsh side.

They line up with captain Lauren Parfitt as Glamorgan's first full‑time female players – a core group tasked with turning ambition into results and status into substance.

With Smale now part of that spine, Glamorgan are not just signing players. They are assembling a team to carry Welsh women’s cricket into a new tier, and a new expectation level.
