Nottinghamshire Sign Mitchell Hay After Verreynne Recall

Nottinghamshire have wasted no time replacing Kyle Verreynne, signing New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Mitchell Hay for the run-in to their County Championship title defence.

Hay, 26, arrives at Trent Bridge just two days after Verreynne’s latest spell was abruptly ended by a recall from Cricket South Africa over the weekend. The timing could hardly be more awkward: three games left, the Division One title on the line, and their first-choice keeper suddenly gone.

Director of cricket Mick Newell did not hide the frustration, calling the loss of Verreynne with so much at stake “not ideal”. It isn’t. Notts sit second in the table, only four points behind leaders Somerset, and every selection call from here shapes the title race.

So they have turned to a Black Caps international with a solid body of work behind him. Hay has built his domestic career with Canterbury, where he has passed 2,100 first-class runs at an average of 45.14 – numbers that speak of reliability as much as flair.

Head coach Peter Moores, while echoing the sense of disappointment at Verreynne’s departure, framed Hay’s arrival as an opportunity rather than a patch-up job. He described the New Zealander as “hugely exciting” and “quality”, and crucially, a player who can slot straight into the balance of the side.

“He is a mature keeper with the ability to bat in the top six, which fits the role we need coming into the business end of the season,” Moores told the club website.

That line matters. Notts have built their success on depth through the order and a keeper who can hold a top-six spot. Hay’s record suggests he can do exactly that, and do it under pressure.

The context he walks into is clear. A tight title race. A champion side chasing, not being chased. Three matches to haul in Somerset and retain their crown.

Now it falls to a newcomer from Canterbury to help decide whether Nottinghamshire finish as defending champions in name only, or as back-to-back winners.
