New Zealand Black Caps Announce Pace-Heavy Squad for India T20 Series
New Zealand have named a pace-heavy, near full-strength squad to take on India on home soil, recalling Adam Milne and Michael Bracewell for a marquee T20 series that will test both depth and durability.
Head coach Rob Walter has gone with a 16-man group built around seven frontline quicks, a statement of intent against the current T20 world champions and a nod to the relentless schedule ahead.
Up top, Finn Allen keeps his place as the tone-setter and will be joined by Tim Seifert, fresh from a standout northern summer. Seifert was player of the tournament in England’s The Hundred, driving Manchester Super Giants to the title and earning himself a Big Bash deal with the Sydney Sixers. Now he walks straight into another high-pressure stage, this time in front of home crowds.
Milne and Bracewell back in the frame
The most eye-catching name among the bowlers is Adam Milne. At 34, the quick returns to the Black Caps setup after the frustration of missing the World Cup through injury, despite being named in the initial 15-man squad. His inclusion adds raw pace and experience to a seam unit that already features Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes and Nathan Smith.
Bracewell’s comeback is just as significant. The allrounder also saw his World Cup hopes wrecked by injury, only to watch Cole McConchie excel as an emergency replacement in India and Sri Lanka. Now the roles reverse. Bracewell is back, McConchie makes way, and New Zealand double down on a proven off-spinning allrounder who lengthens both batting and bowling.
The squeeze for spots is brutal. Of those who travelled to the World Cup, Ish Sodhi and Jimmy Neesham miss out entirely, while Ben Sears remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.
Ravindra out, Jacobs in
One of the form players of New Zealand’s recent rise, Rachin Ravindra, sits this one out after a freak shoulder injury suffered while on commercial duties last week. The Black Caps are hopeful he will be ready for the five-match ODI series starting at the beginning of November, but for now his absence leaves a sizeable gap.
Bevon Jacobs steps into that space as one of three players overlooked for World Cup selection who now get their chance. He joins quicks Zak Foulkes and Nathan Smith in a bowling group that mixes established names with hungry fringe operators.
Walter made it clear this is no experimental tour dressed up as a marquee series. The intent is to win – but not at the cost of breaking players.
“India is a quality team and a challenging opposition, so to take them on in our own conditions in front of Kiwi fans is really exciting,” Walter said. He expects packed houses across the series and wants to see his side go at the world champions with full force. At the same time, he pointed to the “volume of cricket in the coming months” and underlined that all 16 players are likely to feature as workloads are carefully managed.
Mitchell Santner captains a side that can bat deep, hit hard and throw different kinds of pace and spin at India. It is, as Walter put it, a squad that “covers all bases”. Now it has to prove that on the field.
