Mukesh Kumar has stepped into Nottinghamshire’s title defence at precisely the moment when nerves usually start to fray.
The India seam bowler, 32, has signed on at Trent Bridge with Notts locked in a tight County Championship race, sitting second in Division One and only four points behind leaders Somerset with two matches left. It is the kind of move that tells you a club believes the trophy is still theirs to lose.
For Kumar, this is a first crack at the English domestic game after a career built entirely on Indian pitches. He arrives with 233 first-class wickets behind him, a seasoned campaigner rather than a punt on potential, and with the added edge of recent success. Just days ago he took 3-62 for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy final, playing a key role in their first title in 14 years.
That performance underlined why Nottinghamshire moved when they did. A bowler in rhythm, coming off a pressure match, now dropped straight into the closing stretch of a title chase.
Kumar last played Test cricket for India against England in 2024, one of three caps that hinted at his ability to operate at the highest level. Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores has called him a “quality” addition at “a crucial time of the season” – and the timing could hardly be sharper.
