Leicestershire Faces 27-Point Deduction After Poor Pitch Ruling

Leicestershire’s stirring August win over Glamorgan has come at a heavy price, with the club docked 27 County Championship points and fined £5,000 after their Uptonsteel Grace Road pitch was branded “poor” by regulators.

What looked like a routine home victory by 42 runs has now been rewritten as a costly misstep in planning and preparation.

Bollywood shoot, bright sunshine, and a damaged surface

At the heart of the case sits an unusual explanation. Callum Lewin, Leicestershire’s groundsman, told officials that an unscheduled Bollywood film shoot had taken place at Grace Road four days before the match, leaving the pitch uncovered for eight hours in bright sunshine.

That exposure, he argued, compromised the surface. Match referee Ian Ramage’s written judgment showed just how far it went. He recorded 43 instances of uneven bounce across the four days against Glamorgan, enough for the pitch to be officially rated “poor” and for the Cricket Regulator to bring a charge under the ECB Pitch Regulations.

The independent Cricket Discipline Panel backed the Regulator’s case. The panel accepted that Leicestershire had not set out to manufacture a minefield, but stressed that the club should have foreseen the risks around access, covering, and preparation.

Their conclusion was blunt: these were factors that should have been built into Leicestershire’s planning. They weren’t.

The punishment: now and later

The sanctions cut deep and stretch into the future.

Leicestershire confirmed in a statement that the panel had imposed an immediate eight-point deduction in the County Championship, with another eight points suspended until the end of the 2027 season. The suspended element will hang over the club as a live threat; any repeat issues could bring it crashing down.

On top of that, the ECB’s own playing conditions deliver an extra blow. Under ECB Rothesay County Championship Playing Condition 16.2.6, the 19 points Leicestershire earned from that very win over Glamorgan will be stripped from their 2026 Championship total.

Add it all together and the club stands to lose 27 points overall: eight now, eight potentially later, and 19 already earmarked for removal in a future campaign.

A match they won on the field has become a long-term handicap off it. The cricket was decided in four days. The consequences will linger for years.
