Kent Faces Late Setback as Hasan Mahmud Returns for International Duty

Kent’s promotion push has been dealt a late jolt. Their spearhead overseas quick, Hasan Mahmud, is heading home just as the season reaches its sharp end.

The 26-year-old fast-medium, who has quietly become one of the most influential signings of Kent’s summer, has been recalled by Bangladesh for international duty and will miss the final two County Championship Division Two fixtures.

Hasan has taken 30 wickets in only seven matches across the Championship and the T20 Blast, a return that underlines how central he has been to Kent’s rise into the promotion race. He offered pace, control, and a cutting edge with the new ball – exactly what you want when the pressure tightens in September.

Instead, he now flies back to prepare for Bangladesh’s upcoming series against Afghanistan, West Indies and South Africa. International cricket has spoken, and Kent must adjust on the fly.

“We're disappointed to have lost Hasan's services for the County Championship run-in, but we respect the decision made by the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) after constructive talks, and wish him well this winter,” said director of cricket Simon Cook on the club’s website.

The frustration is obvious. The timing is brutal. But there is no hint of a row – just the reality of a county side losing out to the demands of a national board.

Cook moved quickly to point towards the resources that remain. “While he will be a big miss, both of our other overseas bowlers, Keith Dudgeon and Khaled Ahmed, remain available for these last two matches of the summer."

So Kent turn to what they still have, not what they have lost.

They sit third in Division Two, just two points behind Northamptonshire in second. The equation looks tempting: two home games to come, both against the bottom two sides, Lancashire and Gloucestershire. On paper, it is the kind of run-in coaches dream about.

But promotion races rarely follow the script. Without Hasan’s 30 wickets and the menace he brings with the ball, Kent’s attack will need fresh heroes. Dudgeon and Khaled step into the spotlight now, with the margins for error shrinking by the over.

Two games, two home pitches, and a promotion place within touching distance. Kent must find a way to finish the job without the bowler who helped drag them into contention in the first place.
