India Near Full Strength for T20I Series Against Afghanistan
India have dropped the experimental feel and gone close to full strength for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in New Delhi, with Jasprit Bumrah headlining a hardened, senior-core squad led by Shreyas Iyer.
Bumrah back in blue
Bumrah’s name jumps off the sheet. His last outing in this format came on the biggest stage of all – the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand in March. From that high, he now walks straight back into a group that looks far more like India’s first-choice attack than the second-string units used on recent tours.
He is not alone. Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakaravarthy are in as well, giving India a left-arm swing option and a mystery spin threat, while Harshit Rana has been named subject to fitness clearance. It is a bowling unit that mirrors the England tour in both shape and intent, with the selectors clearly keen to restore rhythm and combinations ahead of a busy T20 calendar.
Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar also sit in the “fitness-permitting” bracket. If cleared, they add seam-bowling all-round depth and off-spin balance to a squad already thick with options.
Samson back, eight from Zimbabwe miss out
Sanju Samson’s recall is another strong signal of intent. Left out of the Zimbabwe T20Is, he returns here as one of two designated wicketkeepers alongside Ishan Kishan. The message is clear: this is not a developmental camp; this is a senior audition.
To make room, India have rung the changes from that Zimbabwe trip. Eight players drop out: Rinku Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Harsh Dubey, Prabhsimran Singh, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Mayank Yadav and Ashok Sharma. Shedge, Prince and Prasidh had also been part of the England tour but do not make the cut for Afghanistan, underlining the tightening of standards as India move back towards their frontline pool.
At the top, Shreyas Iyer continues as captain, with Tilak Varma named vice-captain. Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi keep the batting fresh around a more established core, while Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi round out a spin department built to control games on Delhi surfaces.
Delhi dates, selection stakes
All three matches will be played in New Delhi on September 13, 15 and 17, a compact block that offers little hiding place for form or fitness. With so many first-choice names back in the frame and several players carrying fitness notes, every session will carry weight – for the medical staff as much as the selectors.
India’s squad for Afghanistan T20Is: Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Tilak Varma (VC), Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy*, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar*, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah*, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana*
Three nights in Delhi, a near full-strength India, and Afghanistan in their path. For those fighting to lock down spots in India’s T20 future, this is no gentle September series – it is an examination.
