New Delhi’s BRICS lockdown won’t stop India’s T20 date with Afghanistan.
For much of Thursday, the first T20I between India and Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium hung in the balance, caught in the crossfire of security concerns around the BRICS Summit in the Capital. With heads of state flying in and large parts of the city expected to be under tight security, Delhi Police had pushed for the game to be moved by a day.
For fans, that raised an immediate fear: another marquee international fixture in Delhi lost to the city’s logistical gridlock.
By late evening, the picture changed.
The Delhi District Cricket Association stepped in with clarity and, crucially, certainty. After meetings with the Delhi Traffic Police, the DDCA announced that the game will go ahead on Sunday as planned, easing worries for broadcasters, teams and ticket-holders alike.
“India–Afghanistan 1st T20I on 13 September at Arun Jaitley Stadium will go ahead as scheduled. Following a meeting with Delhi Traffic Police, DDCA has been assured of all necessary support and arrangements,” the association confirmed in a social media post.
In a city bracing for motorcades, road closures and heightened checks, that assurance matters. It means match-day operations, security layers and traffic diversions will now run in tandem with one of the most high-profile diplomatic events on the calendar.
The stakes on the field were always clear. Now, at least, everyone knows the contest will start on time.
