Gloucestershire Secure Loan Deal for Young Bowler Che Simmons

Gloucestershire have moved early to secure one of county cricket’s more intriguing young quicks, bringing in Warwickshire fast bowler Che Simmons on loan for the rest of the season ahead of a permanent switch in 2027.

The 22-year-old will be available for Gloucestershire’s final three County Championship fixtures and has already committed his future to the club, signing a two-year deal that begins next summer. The loan now is the bridge; the contract to come is the statement.

Simmons broke into Warwickshire’s first team in 2024, making his County Championship debut for the Bears, but opportunities since then have been scarce. Just three first-class appearances have followed, a thin return for a bowler widely regarded as one with serious pace and upside.

That lack of regular top-level cricket drove his decision. Simmons admitted that the chance to play consistent first-team cricket was a “big factor” in choosing to move, a clear nod to his desire to step out of the second-team shadows and test himself week in, week out.

Gloucestershire have read that situation and pounced. Director of cricket Jon Lewis made no attempt to hide how highly the club rate their new recruit, describing Simmons as “a hugely talented young cricketer with a very high ceiling”. Lewis pointed to the volume of work Simmons has already done in Warwickshire’s second team and framed this move as the natural next rung on the ladder: a platform to “showcase his abilities at first-team level”.

For Gloucestershire, it is a calculated play on potential. For Simmons, it is a chance that will not come dressed in brighter colours: three Championship matches now to stake an early claim, then two full seasons to prove he belongs at the heart of a new attack.
