England Selects Donald and Crocombe for Sri Lanka Series

England have rolled the dice on two new names for the white-ball clashes with Sri Lanka, handing maiden call-ups to Aneurin Donald and Henry Crocombe after standout domestic campaigns.

Donald, the aggressive Derbyshire opener who has lit up the Vitality Blast and impressed for Trent Rockets in The Hundred, steps into a 16-player T20 squad bristling with top-order options. His inclusion rewards a season in which he has consistently torn into powerplays and forced bowlers onto the back foot. England believe that intent can translate to the international stage.

Crocombe, a bustling seamer, claims his spot in the 16-man ODI group after a summer that kept him firmly on the selectors’ radar. His pace, heavy lengths and willingness to attack the stumps have made him a handful in the one-day game, and now he gets the chance to test that method against Sri Lanka.

England men's national selector Marcus North underlined why both have broken through, describing them as “two promising players who have earned their places on the back of impressive performances in domestic cricket”.

He pointed to Donald’s “exceptional season for Derbyshire in the Vitality Blast and also with Trent Rockets in The Hundred”, while noting that Crocombe is a bowler England have “had an eye on all summer”.

There was a significant medical update too. All-rounder Jacob Bethell has undergone successful surgery on a knee injury earlier this week and is already working towards a return in time for the white-ball series against Australia in November. England see him as a key multi-dimensional option, and his recovery timeline will be watched closely.

Not everyone emerged from selection unscathed. Durham seamer Brydon Carse has been left out of both squads. The 31-year-old, who was dropped for the second Test of the ongoing series against Pakistan, remains under scrutiny after he was briefly arrested following an incident outside a Derby nightclub on 22 August.

So England head into the Sri Lanka series with two uncapped hopefuls, one gifted all-rounder on the comeback trail, and an established quick on the outside looking in. For Donald and Crocombe, the door has opened. The question now is who strides through it and stays there.
