Barnsley Strengthen Defence with Connor O'Riordan Signing
Barnsley have moved to strengthen the heart of their defence with the season-long loan signing of Blackburn Rovers centre-back Connor O'Riordan, securing an option to make the deal permanent next summer.
The 22-year-old, capped by the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level, arrives with recent and relevant experience of the EFL grind. He spent the first half of last season in League One with Doncaster, learning the division’s tempo and physical edge before returning to Blackburn in January.
Back at Ewood Park, O'Riordan forced his way into the picture, making six appearances in all competitions for the Championship side. Not a headline-grabbing total, but enough to suggest Blackburn saw a player on the rise rather than one simply making up numbers.
Barnsley now aim to be the club that gives him a full platform. A young defender with size, composure and a taste of both League One and Championship football fits neatly into the Tykes’ model of developing hungry talent with resale value.
He will not have to wait long for a first test. O'Riordan is in line to make his Barnsley debut on Saturday, when the Tykes travel to Leyton Orient. A new club, a new back line, and a long season ahead – but also a clear opportunity.
