Auqib Nabi Joins Surrey for County Championship Challenge
Auqib Nabi’s rise continues. The in-form fast bowler is heading to Surrey, the latest Indian quick to be snapped up by county cricket at the peak of his powers.
The club have confirmed that Nabi has signed a short-term deal and will be available for their next three County Championship fixtures, against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan. It’s a compact window, but a crucial one in the title run-in.
Surrey turn to India’s form quick
Surrey’s schedule has been brutal. Six Championship games in six weeks, barely any time for bowlers to get their legs back, and senior players also juggling international commitments. Alec Stewart, Director of Men’s Cricket, spelt out the reality as the club moved to reinforce their attack.
“With the exceptionally challenging schedule of six games in six weeks, with minimal recovery between matches along with international fixtures, we’ve had to add options to our bowling stocks for the County Championship run in,” Stewart said. “We look forward to welcoming Auqib to the group this week.”
This is not a speculative signing. Nabi arrives in England on the back of a season that has changed his career.
From Ranji revelation to county cricket
Over the last few months, the 29-year-old has been one of the standout red-ball bowlers in India. He spearheaded Jammu and Kashmir’s extraordinary maiden Ranji Trophy title, collecting 60 wickets in the campaign and walking away with the player of the tournament award. Those numbers travel. So does that kind of temperament.
His domestic surge translated quickly into opportunity. Delhi Capitals handed him a bumper IPL deal for the 2026 season, and he featured in five games, a first taste of the league’s spotlight after years of hard work on the circuit.
Selectors have taken notice as well. Nabi has already broken into India A and was drafted into the senior Test squad in Sri Lanka as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement. He did not debut, but the call-up alone underlined how close he now stands to a full international cap.
A new challenge at The Oval
Now comes a different examination: English conditions, a tight Championship race, and the expectations that come with pulling on a Surrey shirt.
“It’s an honour to join Surrey, one of the best Clubs in England,” Nabi said. “I’m looking forward to learning from the group and helping them for the next three matches.”
For Surrey, he offers fresh pace and heavy overs at a time when their regular quicks are stretched thin. For Nabi, it is something else again — a chance to prove that the form that lit up the Ranji Trophy and carried him into the IPL can also bite in the hard grind of county cricket.
Three games. One of England’s biggest clubs. A fast bowler in a purple patch. If he gets it right, this short stint could be the final nudge that turns a near-cap into a full India debut.
