Asian Games 2026 cricket schedule updates: India’s knockout matches moved earlier
The men’s T20 knockout schedule at the Asian Games has been quietly nudged forward, with afternoon matches now starting 30 minutes earlier – a small tweak on paper that could carry big consequences on the field.
Organisers have advanced the start of the men’s afternoon fixtures from 2.00 pm to 1.30 pm local time. The women’s schedule stays exactly as it was. No reshuffle, no new slots, just the men’s knockouts brought forward.
For India’s men, already handed a direct ticket to the quarter-finals of the Aichi-Nagoya Games 2026, that means their first outing now begins at 1.30 pm local time. With Japan 3 hours and 30 minutes ahead, that’s a 10.00 am start in India (IST) – an early watch for fans, but still well within prime viewing territory.
The morning games are untouched. They continue to begin at 9.00 am in Japan, 5.30 am IST, setting a long day at the ground for teams and officials alike.
The new timings don’t just affect the quarter-finals. The second semi-final and the gold-medal match have also been fixed for 1.30 pm Japan Time. All three fixtures sit squarely in that earlier afternoon window, tightening the day and cutting out any risk of play drifting into the evening.
Yet not everyone has been brought up to speed. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officials say they have not been informed of any change, even as the official website already reflects the updated schedule. On paper, the shift is confirmed. On the ground, communication is still catching up.
Specific Adjustments
The adjustment applies specifically to:
- the second quarter-final on September 28, where India are scheduled to play;
- the second semi-final on October 1, where India are expected to feature if they progress;
- and the gold-medal match on October 3.
All three will now begin at 1.30 pm local time.
The rest of the knockout grid stays in the earlier slot. The first quarter-final, involving Pakistan, the first semi-final, and the bronze-medal play-off will all start at 9.00 am local time.
Nothing moves for the preliminary-round fixtures. Matches involving Afghanistan, Japan, Nepal, Hong Kong (China), Malaysia and Oman keep their original timings. The women’s tournament, which starts directly from the quarter-final stage, also remains unchanged, with all games at 9.00 am and 2.00 pm local time.
Reason for the Shift
So why the shift at all?
Sources point to a simple, old-fashioned reason: daylight. It gets dark early in Japan, and with no floodlights at the venue, organisers have decided to push the longer men’s games forward to avoid creeping too close to dusk. Rather than risk a tight finish in poor light, they have chosen to give themselves a buffer.
Outside the Games schedule, India’s T20I against Japan on September 22 at Sano International Stadium also reflects that concern for daylight, though with its own timing. That match, not part of the Asian Games programme, will begin at 1.00 pm JST, 9.30 am IST.
Kick-off times have changed. The venue hasn’t. The question now is whether everyone involved will catch up to the clock before the first ball is bowled.
