Marta Kostyuk Advances to Guadalajara Open Quarter-finals Without Playing

Marta Kostyuk has reached the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open without striking a single ball in anger.

The top seed arrived in Mexico with a first-round bye, then saw her scheduled second-round opponent, Taylor Townsend, withdraw on Wednesday because of illness. Two rounds, no points played, and the world number 10 is already in the last eight.

Quarter-Finals Matchup

Kostyuk is slated to finally open her campaign against eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova, who survived a gruelling three-set scrap to get there. Samsonova squeezed past Kayla Day 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-5), a tight, nervy contest that twice went to tiebreaks and left the Russian battle-hardened for the showdown with the top seed.

If Kostyuk arrives fresher, Samsonova arrives sharper.

Kostyuk's Season

The Ukrainian comes into Guadalajara in the middle of the best season of her career. She lifted her maiden WTA 1000 title in Madrid in May, a breakthrough that announced her as a serious force at the top of the women’s game. She then backed it up on the biggest stages, reaching the semi-finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, proving that clay and grass hold no fear.

Hard courts have not been unkind either. Most recently, the 24-year-old pushed into the last 16 of the US Open before falling to sixth seed Linda Noskova.

Guadalajara Challenge

Now Guadalajara offers something different: a strange mix of reward and risk. Reward, because the draw has opened kindly so far. Risk, because a player of Kostyuk’s calibre will be expected to justify that top seeding the moment she finally steps on court.

Samsonova, already tested by the altitude and the tension of a double-tiebreak win, will not make that easy.
