Kostyuk Advances to Guadalajara Quarters Without Playing a Match

Marta Kostyuk is into the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open without having hit a single ball in anger.

The top seed arrived in Mexico with momentum and a first-round bye. She has yet to need her racket. Her scheduled second-round opponent, Taylor Townsend, withdrew on Wednesday because of illness, handing the Ukrainian a walkover and a strangely quiet path into the last eight.

That silence will not last.

Kostyuk, now firmly established as world number 10, is due to launch her campaign against eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova, who survived a bruising three-set scrap to get there. Samsonova edged past Kayla Day 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-5), a match that swung wildly before the Russian steadied herself in both tiebreaks.

Kostyuk arrives in Guadalajara in the middle of a breakthrough season. She claimed her maiden WTA 1000 title in Madrid in May, a statement week that underlined her shift from promise to genuine force. She then backed it up with deep runs on the biggest stages, reaching the semi-finals at both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Hard courts have not been unkind either. Most recently, the 24-year-old pushed through to the last 16 of the US Open before falling to sixth seed Linda Noskova.

Now she stands in a curious position: a quarter-finalist without a match played, rested but untested, waiting to find out whether fresh legs or lack of rhythm will define her Mexican campaign.
