Grigor Dimitrov: Journey from Haskovo to ATP Stardom

His story starts far from the glamour of the tour. Dimitrov was born in 1991 in Haskovo, Bulgaria, into a household where sport was not a hobby but a way of life. His father, Dimitar Dimitrov, worked as a tennis coach. His mother, Maria Dimitrova, taught physical education and had played volleyball herself. Competition, discipline, early mornings – they were part of the family routine.

Dimitar did more than just open the door to tennis for his son. He put a racket in Grigor’s hand and stayed by his side through those crucial early years, guiding every swing, every drill. The courts in Haskovo became their second home. Day after day, the boy returned, hitting ball after ball under his father’s eye.

It didn’t take long for Dimitar to understand this was different. His son didn’t just enjoy the game. He absorbed it. In a 2014 interview with the Financial Times, father and son looked back on those formative sessions, remembering the endless hours on the local courts that laid the foundations for a career at the very top of the ATP rankings.

Away from the baseline and the bright lights, Dimitrov’s life has also drawn attention off court. He is currently in the spotlight beyond tennis circles as the boyfriend of actor Eiza Gonzalez, a relationship that has added another layer of celebrity interest to a player already well known to tennis fans.
