Oscar Piastri Penalized: Stripped of Third Place at Italian Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri has been stripped of third place on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix after stewards ruled he impeded Liam Lawson during qualifying at Monza.

The incident came late in Q2, in one of those messy, high-stakes phases that Monza specialises in. Piastri had just left the pits on an out-lap in his McLaren, while the two Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Lawson were gearing up for their final flying runs, running out of sequence with the rest of the pack.

Red Bull had a plan. Lawson had towed Verstappen earlier in the session; now Verstappen was returning the favour, trying to drag his team-mate into Q3. With Verstappen carrying an engine-change penalty that will send him to the back of Sunday’s grid, Lawson’s progress into the top 10 shootout was crucial for the team’s race-day strategy.

That plan unraveled at the first chicane.

Warned that the Red Bulls were approaching, Piastri moved aside for Verstappen and cleared the world champion without drama. But his car placement left him rolling into the Rettifilo chicane just as Lawson arrived at full speed. The New Zealander had to check his momentum and lost time he never recovered over the rest of the lap.

After the session, Piastri was called to the stewards. He explained that he knew the Red Bulls were coming but did not realise they were on push laps until Verstappen appeared committed to a timed run. At that point, he did what he could to get out of Verstappen’s way, yet his line left him with nowhere to go but through the chicane, straight into Lawson’s path.

The stewards accepted that the Australian had been placed in an awkward situation but were unswayed on the core issue: Lawson had been impeded.

In a statement, the FIA noted that, given the information Piastri had and the position he found himself in, “the driver of Car 81 had, at this stage, no other options available and hence, inadvertently, and also unnecessarily, impeded Car 30. Therefore the standard penalty of a drop of 3 grid positions is imposed.”

The ruling is brutal for Piastri. His original third place becomes sixth on the grid.

The reshuffle has major consequences at the sharp end. Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are promoted to the second row, tucking in behind front-row starters Pierre Gasly and George Russell. Lawson, meanwhile, never made it to Q3, leaving Verstappen alone in the hunt for a slipstream when it mattered most.

Red Bull had hoped Lawson would be the perfect wingman, towing Verstappen to a banker time before the champion starts his recovery drive from the back. Instead, a split-second traffic tangle at Turn 1 has redrawn the grid and stripped them of a key strategic weapon for Sunday’s race.
