Wrexham's Championship Transformation Ahead of Swansea Clash
Phil Parkinson insists Wrexham will walk into Swansea City on Saturday night as a very different Championship animal to the one that left south Wales bruised and empty-handed last season.
Back in December, the Red Dragons were edged out 2-1 by Mitor Matos’ side, a defeat that stung but ultimately failed to derail them. Wrexham regrouped, gathered momentum, and finished the 2025-26 campaign in seventh – their highest placing in the second tier.
This time, the backdrop is very different. Swansea sit top of the Championship, 10 points from a possible 12, setting the pace and carrying the weight of early-season expectation. Wrexham arrive as contenders rather than curiosities, armed with evidence that they belong at this level.
That evidence came in midweek. A 3-0 dismantling of Millwall did more than add three points; it underlined a shift in maturity and control that Parkinson has been demanding.
Asked whether his side are better equipped than on their last visit to Swansea, Parkinson did not hesitate. “Absolutely,” he said. “The Millwall game is a good example of that, where we won 2-0 down there last year and we beat them 3-0 this year.
“But they were very different games in terms of the control we had in the game this time around.
“We looked to a more accomplished Championship side this time around. The players have got used to the level and of course we've added quality into the group.”
That word – accomplished – is doing a lot of work. Last season’s Wrexham impressed in bursts, often riding emotion and momentum. This version looks calmer, more measured, more comfortable dictating the tempo away from home.
The numbers back Parkinson’s point. A ground where they had already won 2-0 last year became the stage for an even more ruthless 3-0 victory, but the manager’s emphasis fell not on the scoreline, but on the authority with which his team handled the occasion.
Now comes a different kind of test. Swansea, on their own patch, top of the league, under the lights at 20:00 BST. A year ago, Wrexham left with regret. On Saturday, they walk in with a manager convinced his side has grown into the division – and ready to prove it against the leaders.
