Ukrainian Center Kate Koval Transfers to Baylor After LSU Departure

Kate Koval, the highly regarded Ukrainian center who walked away from Louisiana State University after the arrival of a Russian recruit, has found her new home at Baylor.

The 20-year-old has been granted a rare transfer waiver by the NCAA, clearing her to join the Big 12 powerhouse in Texas despite the transfer window closing back in April. LSU requested the waiver, allowing Koval to move on after just one season in Baton Rouge.

On the court, her freshman year underlined why so many programs wanted her in the first place. Koval featured in all 35 of LSU’s games last season, averaging 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and giving the Tigers a reliable interior presence in their rotation.

Off the court, everything changed with the arrival of 17-year-old Russian player Anna Minaeva. LSU initially announced Koval’s departure as being for “personal reasons”, a vague label that barely hinted at the depth of what she was wrestling with.

Koval then chose to spell it out herself.

In a powerful Instagram statement, she linked her decision directly to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and the impact of that war on her life and family.

“My father serves in the Ukrainian military and takes tremendous pride in defending his country against Russian aggression,” she wrote. “For me, this war is not distant or abstract. People close to me have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and places where I grew up and first began playing basketball have been destroyed by missile strikes.

“The timing of this situation and the deep personal effect it has had on me, my family and those we care about who continue to live through and fight this war ultimately made me question whether LSU remained the right place for me.”

Her words cut through the usual transfer-market noise. This was not about minutes, usage, or system fit. It was about a player trying to reconcile her career with a war that has torn through her home country and directly shaped her family’s daily reality.

Under NCAA rules, student-athletes can only be granted transfer waivers outside the designated portal windows in narrow circumstances. The governing body requires “extenuating circumstances or events unrelated to the sport that are out of the individual’s control,” and those events must have occurred after the last opportunity to enter the transfer portal had closed.

Koval’s case clearly met that bar in the eyes of the NCAA, opening the door for her move to Baylor and ensuring she will not be forced to sit out.

For Baylor, it is a significant addition: a proven, physically imposing center with high-major experience and room to grow. For Koval, it is a reset — a chance to continue her career in an environment she feels she can fully commit to.
