Israel Adesanya has joined the chorus of voices rallying around Tom Aspinall, offering a raw, heartfelt reaction to the brutal twist that has cost the Brit his UFC heavyweight title.
A week on from Aspinall being forced to vacate the belt because of ongoing complications with a serious eye injury, the reality of the situation is still sinking in across the sport. The damage, sustained in his last outing in the cage last year, has stubbornly resisted multiple surgeries. Now, at 33, Aspinall has stepped away from competition to focus on his health, leaving his future in MMA under a cloud and fans debating what comes next for one of the division’s most explosive talents.
Adesanya, never shy about speaking plainly, didn’t bother dressing it up.
“So, his eye is in a position, or in a state, where even if he gets hit hard during training, it can affect his eye, and then that way he's not going to be able to show up. That sucks, man.”
No sugar-coating. Just the harshness of a career suddenly interrupted at its peak.
Because Aspinall wasn’t just another contender. He was surging. Outside of his lone UFC defeat — a freak injury that he later avenged — the heavyweight from Britain had been tearing through the division, flattening contenders and looking every bit like the man who might reign for years. “[He's] a guy who has done it the right way,” he said. “He came in; he's not a, you know, like me or Conor or whatever – braggadocious, talk sh*t, but still deliver. He just came in and worked, showcased why he's a great heavyweight, and then become a champion after how long? Took the fight on short notice, I believe, with Pavlovich. Then, eventually, now, he should be celebrated as the heavyweight champion; the baddest man on the planet.”
That short-notice win over Sergei Pavlovich cemented Aspinall as more than a prospect. It turned him into the man other heavyweights had to worry about. A composed finisher. A quiet worker. A champion who didn’t need to scream to be heard.
Now he can’t even safely take a hard shot in training.
“It sucks. For a guy like Tom, who I feel is a good dude. He's a great champion. It's just a sh*t roll of the dice.”
