Thilo Kehrer didn’t just change clubs on Deadline Day. He stepped straight into the chaos that defines it.
“The first time for me. Very exciting, it was different,” the German centre-back told ESPN, still sounding as if the adrenaline hadn’t quite worn off. One day he heard of Ajax’s interest. The next, he was on a plane to Amsterdam. No long courtship, no drawn-out saga. Just a flurry of calls, a decision, and a signature.

“Everything happened very quickly,” Kehrer said. “Talks with Jordi, with the coach. After that, the clubs wrapped it up. The next day I was on my way.”

“The most important thing for me is to be competitive and to play for titles, to have the ambition to win trophies and matches,” he explained. “That is possible here. The foundation is there, now we have to make it work.”

Will he still be in Amsterdam beyond that date? He isn’t pretending to know.
“I don’t know yet,” he admitted. “We’ll see how the season goes, but I’m certainly open to it. There are still many matches until next year. We’ll see.”
It’s a candid answer, and a realistic one. Ajax see him as a piece of their next cycle. Kehrer sees Ajax as a platform to compete, to win, to stay in the spotlight. The rest will be decided on the pitch.

“It makes it easier when you have familiar faces,” Kehrer said. “They help you integrate. You already have a connection. It was nice to see them again.”
His web of familiarity stretches further. He has crossed paths with Marc ter Stegen and Julian Brandt in the Bundesliga and with the German national team. These are not strangers, but reference points in a new chapter.
Ajax have signed a defender with Champions League and international experience. Kehrer has chosen a club with a clear identity and a restless hunger for trophies. The foundation, as he put it, is there.
