Sunderland are about to make one of the boldest statements of the summer window, agreeing a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana as they gear up for their first European campaign in more than half a century.

The attraction is obvious. He is understood to be excited by the prospect of joining Sunderland just as the club returns to continental competition for the first time in 51 years, having qualified for the Europa League.

Defensive Reinforcements
Defensive reinforcements have been a clear priority. Kevin Danso is set to join from Tottenham on an initial loan with an option to buy, adding power and experience at the back. The Austria defender’s arrival will give Sunderland greater depth and flexibility as they juggle league and European fixtures.
He will not be alone in shoring up the back line. Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie have already been brought in this summer, adding both nous and competition in defensive areas. In midfield, Jules Ahoka has arrived to strengthen the core of a team that surprised many last season.
