Sparta Rotterdam Nears Loan Deal for PSV's Isaac Babadi
Sparta Rotterdam are on the verge of landing Isaac Babadi on loan from PSV, a late-window move that could give one of Dutch football’s more intriguing young midfielders the minutes he has been starved of in Eindhoven.
The 21-year-old has slipped to the fringes at the Philips Stadion. Once viewed as a rising gem, he now finds himself outside Peter Bosz’s plans, with his last first-team appearance for PSV dating back to May of last year.
The clock has kept ticking. His career has not.
A season-long loan at Royal Antwerp FC offered a temporary escape. Babadi featured 21 times for the Belgian side in official matches, gaining experience but not quite forcing a breakthrough that would alter his status back at PSV. On his return, the pathway remained blocked, the competition fierce, the bench familiar.
PSV have therefore opened the door. According to Eindhovens Dagblad, the club have agreed to let Babadi leave on loan, and Sparta have moved decisively as Deadline Day approaches.
They were not alone in sensing opportunity. Voetbal International reported on Tuesday that Fortuna Sittard and Sparta were both in the hunt, each seeing the same thing: a technically gifted midfielder, still under contract with PSV until mid-2028, with 35 senior appearances, three goals and one assist behind him, but with his best years clearly ahead.
Sparta look set to win that race.
The deal comes with its own nuances. It stands apart from the recent transfer of Ayoni Santos from Sparta to PSV, with both clubs insisting the moves are separate pieces of business rather than a packaged swap. According to ED, Sparta will not take on Babadi’s full salary, but will cover part of his wages to make the move work.
For Sparta, it is a calculated gamble with obvious upside. They gain a hungry midfielder with Eredivisie and European experience, a player eager to prove that his stalled momentum can be reignited in Rotterdam. For Babadi, it is something more basic: the promise of a pitch, not just a place in the squad list.
The expectation is that the move will be officially confirmed later on Deadline Day. Once the paperwork is done, the question shifts from “if” to “how much” – how much responsibility Sparta will hand to a player who needs rhythm, and how much Babadi can reshape a career that has been waiting, impatiently, for a proper run of games.
