Southend United Sign Ryan Battrum on Loan for Promotion Push

Southend United have dipped into the Premier League ranks to sharpen their promotion push, bringing in West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a month’s loan.

The 21-year-old, who can also slot comfortably into midfield, is no stranger to Roots Hall. He faced Southend in a pre-season friendly for West Ham back in July, a run-out that clearly left a mark on both sides.

"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. He already knows what awaits him. "I've played against them and watched them a lot. Getting crowds of 10,000 in the National League is amazing."

For a young defender trying to break through at a Premier League club, this is exactly the kind of stage he needs: big crowds, demanding expectations, and a side with genuine momentum.

Kieron Dyer’s team have started fast. Southend sit fifth in the early National League table, beaten just once in seven games. The platform is there; now he wants depth to sustain it.

"It's always good to have two players for every position," Dyer said, underlining the intent behind the move. Vontae Daley-Campbell has impressed at right-back, but he will now feel a breath on his neck.

"He gives Vontae Daley-Campbell great competition at right-back. He's got great energy, power, and strength, and he can also invert which we like our full-backs to do. He ticks all the boxes."

That last line tells the story. This is not a panic signing. It is a tactical one. Dyer wants full-backs who can step inside, help build play, and press high. Battrum arrives tailored to that brief.

The timing helps. Southend face Tamworth at home on Tuesday, and Battrum is available immediately. A new signing, under the lights, in front of those 10,000 he has already admired from the other side.

Now he gets to feel that noise behind him.
