Seko Fofana Retires from Ivory Coast Duty After AFCON Triumph

The 31-year-old midfielder has announced his international retirement, choosing to step away just months after helping the Elephants win the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil – the crowning moment of a journey he described as a childhood dream fulfilled.
Emotional Farewell
In an emotional message on his official Instagram account, Fofana addressed supporters directly.
“Dear Ivorian fans, the time has come for me to turn the page. It is with immense pride and deep gratitude that I had the privilege of fighting for my country. Winning the continent's greatest trophy was a childhood dream come true for me, and these memories will be forever etched in the hearts of millions of Ivorians.
“Thank you to my team-mates, the staff, and all of you for the strength and support. I will always remain the Elephants' number one supporter, and I cannot wait to see this new generation write its own history. There is no shortage of talent in our nation.”
A Paris-born talent who came through France’s youth ranks up to under-18 level, Fofana switched his allegiance and received his first senior call-up for Ivory Coast under Marc Wilmots. From there, he grew into one of the team’s emotional leaders, the kind of midfielder who drags games into his orbit with drive and personality as much as technique.
His club career has taken him across some of the game’s major stages. From Manchester City’s academy to Fulham, then on to a marquee spell at Al-Nassr, where he shared a dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo and shouldered the demands that come with that spotlight. Now on loan at FC Porto from Rennes, he played a decisive role in helping the Portuguese giants clinch the domestic league title last season, imposing himself in a country that has long been a launchpad for African stars.
