Sam Edozie Requests Transfer from Southampton Before Deadline
Sam Edozie has submitted a transfer request to Southampton, declaring publicly that he wants out before Tuesday night’s deadline after what he describes as a series of blocked moves away from St Mary’s.
The 23-year-old winger took the unusually direct step of issuing a statement on Instagram, revealing he has received “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe and accusing Southampton of making any exit “extremely difficult to pursue”.
Last summer, he says, he had the chance to go. The club said no.
January brought another opening. Again, no move.
Now, as another window ticks towards its close, the frustration has spilled into the open.
“Last summer I had the opportunity to move elsewhere, but the club did not allow me to leave,” Edozie wrote. “The same happened again in January. This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe.”
At the heart of the dispute, according to Edozie, is Southampton’s stance on any future sale. He claims the club have “requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee”, a condition he believes has put off would-be buyers and left his career in limbo.
Southampton have been approached for comment.
Edozie joined Saints from Manchester City in September 2022, a highly rated wide player looking for a clear runway to first-team football. Across two seasons he has managed 29 starts and 57 substitute appearances, flashes of promise without the sustained rhythm he craves.
That lack of continuity has become a central theme of his complaint. He says he is not getting “the minutes I need” at Southampton and fears watching his peak years drift by from the bench.
“A football career is short,” he said, “and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player.”
For the 2024-25 season, Southampton have already sanctioned a loan move to Belgium, with Edozie heading to Anderlecht in search of that regular football. The loan underlines his point: there is interest, there are options, but no permanent escape route yet.
The winger’s decision to force the issue with a transfer request and a public statement now puts pressure squarely on the club hierarchy as the deadline looms. Whether Southampton hold their line on any future fee or soften their stance could define the next chapter of a career that, as Edozie keeps reminding them, does not have time to waste.
