Ro-Zangelo Daal's Impressive Weekend Performance Sparks Debate
Ro-Zangelo Daal lit up the weekend with two goals and a starring role in AZ’s 5-2 win over Go Ahead Eagles – and immediately walked into a familiar Dutch football debate: is this the next big thing, or just the next name we’re getting carried away with?
Perez slams the brakes
On ESPN’s Dit was het Weekend, presenter Wouter Bouwman teed up the hype after showing Daal’s performance. “Things are moving quickly for him,” he remarked, reflecting the growing excitement around the 18-year-old forward.
Kenneth Perez was having none of it.
“Take it easy, man. I’m really going mad from all that nonsense about multi-talent, great talent,” the analyst snapped, cutting straight through the buzz. “He’s a young and decent player. Let’s wait and see what it all becomes.”
No soft landing, no cautious enthusiasm. Perez refused to label Daal a top talent at all.
“All those superlatives about ordinary players... Calm down, please,” he added, drawing a clear line between a promising outing and a coronation.
When Bouwman mentioned that Daal is already on the radar of the Curaçao national team and suggested he could also wait for the Netherlands, Perez needed just one word – “Well...” – to convey his scepticism about fast-tracking any international talk.
Haan goes the other way
Where Perez sees noise, Arie Haan sees a statement.
Working as a reporter for De Telegraaf, the former Ajax and Netherlands midfielder placed Daal straight into his Team of the Week after the winger’s display for AZ.
“They kept trying to block off the outside. Then he just went inside. He played brilliantly,” Haan said, highlighting the variety and intelligence in Daal’s game. Defenders showed him one way; he simply took the other.
For Haan, this isn’t just a nice story for Alkmaar. It’s a development that should interest Xavi, the Netherlands head coach.
“It’s good for Xavi that another winger is emerging who is developing so spectacularly,” he noted, turning Daal’s performance into a gentle nudge towards Zeist.
On Xavi’s radar
That nudge might not be wishful thinking. According to Algemeen Dagblad, Daal already features on a “watchlist” compiled by Xavi and his staff. He is not alone there: fellow forwards Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink and Shaqueel van Persie are also reportedly being monitored.
For Daal, it means his name now lives in two very different worlds at once. In one, he is the subject of strict restraint, a youngster Perez insists must first prove he is more than “decent.” In the other, he is a fresh attacking option quietly tracked by the national coach and celebrated by a former international in a Team of the Week.
Two goals have put him in the spotlight. The next months will decide whether he stays there by right, or whether Perez’s warning about superlatives comes to define his early rise.
