Rio Ngumoha Set to Stay at Liverpool Amid Arsenal Interest
Arsenal have been circling. Bayern Munich were linked in the summer. European scouts have been filing glowing reports for months.
Yet as the noise grows around Rio Ngumoha, the 18-year-old winger looks set to do the one thing that matters most to Liverpool: stay put.
Arsenal’s winger hunt hits another wall
Arsenal’s need on the left is real and pressing. Gabriel Martinelli has gone, no direct replacement walked through the door, and attempts to land Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior in the summer came to nothing.
By 2027, the Premier League champions are expected to be back in the market for a left winger, and trusted voice David Ornstein has already hinted that something could move in January. The gap in Mikel Arteta’s squad is obvious. So is the attraction of Ngumoha.
The teenager’s profile fits perfectly: left-sided, fearless, technically sharp, and already trusted enough at Liverpool that regular starts this season are on the table. For a club hunting the next long-term wide threat, it is an easy connection to make.
But the pressure, for now, is bouncing off Anfield’s walls.
Liverpool move to lock down a rising star
Earlier this month, TEAMtalk revealed that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle over a lucrative new contract. The key phrase there: in principle. The fine print still needs signing.
Even so, the mood on Merseyside is calm. Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke reports that talks to turn that framework into a full, binding deal are progressing without drama, and that Liverpool do not expect late twists.
He outlined the situation clearly: Liverpool are desperate to keep Ngumoha, the player is happy at the club, and the expectation is that he will see regular starting opportunities this season. When a club can offer both money and minutes, the decision for a young player often writes itself.
Ngumoha has bought into the pathway presented to him: a route from highly rated prospect to central piece of Liverpool’s next attacking era. With discussions ongoing and both sides optimistic, every sign points to Arsenal missing out on yet another left-sided target.
“Rio is Liverpool’s future”
Fabrizio Romano has echoed that picture of certainty. He reported that during the summer, when Bayern Munich and others hovered, Liverpool’s message never changed: Ngumoha was not for sale, not leaving, and firmly part of their long-term plan.
“Rio is Liverpool’s future,” Romano stated, underlining how strongly the club value him. There were no negotiations, no formal talks, not even the hint of a compromise. Interest was acknowledged, then shut down.
That stance has not softened now that Arsenal’s need has sharpened.
Romano explained why the Gunners are being dragged into the story. They did not sign a like-for-like Martinelli replacement, they previously moved from Leandro Trossard to Christos Tzolis, and they constantly scan the market for elite opportunities.
If a door to Ngumoha ever opens in 2027, 2028 or beyond, Arsenal would be there. So would clubs from abroad. That is the level of talent Liverpool are dealing with.
Contract talks that will shape two clubs’ futures
For the moment, though, Anfield holds the cards. Romano confirmed that Liverpool are in active discussions over a new deal, working through the usual details: guarantees over role, balance on financial terms, the kind of assurances a prodigious 18-year-old and his camp demand when mapping out a career.
Those talks still need to be completed. Until pen hits paper, there is always a sliver of uncertainty. But every major voice around the situation paints the same picture: Ngumoha is expected to remain a Liverpool player for the long haul, and the club are behaving as if he is central to their future.
Arsenal will keep watching. They always do. But unless something dramatic changes in these negotiations, the left wing that so many in north London hoped Ngumoha might fill looks destined to remain painted in Liverpool red.
