Rangers and Besiktas Agree on Nicolas Raskin Transfer

Rangers are braced for a significant midfield departure, with Nicolas Raskin the subject of a verbal agreement between the Ibrox club and Besiktas, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Turkish window remains open until Friday, and that loophole in the European calendar has given Besiktas their chance. While most major leagues shut their business on Tuesday night, the Super Lig’s extended deadline has kept Rangers’ squad in a state of uneasy suspense.

Now the situation is clear: the clubs have an agreement in principle. The move rests with the player.

Player’s Call on Istanbul Move

Romano reported on Wednesday morning that Rangers and Besiktas have reached a verbal understanding over the Belgium international’s transfer. The structure is in place, the figures are broadly accepted. What remains is Raskin’s decision on whether he wants to swap Glasgow for Istanbul.

Talks are ongoing, with all sides pushing to bring the saga to a conclusion, one way or the other, before the Turkish window shuts. For Rangers, there is little room for drift. They are already playing catch-up domestically, with only four points taken from a possible nine in the early weeks of the Scottish Premiership season.

The deadline for incoming business in Scotland is 5pm on Thursday. Any sale now forces Derek McInnes and the Rangers board into a rapid calculation: cash in and reshape, or hold their ground and risk losing a wantaway player later down the line.

Time for a Break?

Raskin’s Rangers story has contained its share of high notes since he arrived in the January 2023 window. He brought bite and urgency to midfield, and last season he became a fixture, racking up 50 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues.

Yet the tone has shifted.

This term, the 25-year-old has been left out of the squad for two of Rangers’ three league fixtures, a clear sign of the tension around his future. The omission hasn’t been about form. It has been about uncertainty.

There was an expectation inside and outside the club that this summer would bring a decisive move. Raskin’s profile, enhanced further by his performances at the World Cup for Belgium, seemed tailor-made for a step into one of Europe’s top leagues. That interest never truly materialised before most windows closed. No bidding war. No late scramble. Just a talented midfielder stuck in limbo.

Besiktas have now stepped into that gap. Whether they represent the right next step for Raskin will be decided in hours, not weeks.

McInnes’ Balancing Act

Through it all, Derek McInnes has been careful to praise the player’s professionalism, even as speculation swirled.

“Nico's been first-class since he came back from the World Cup - he's been good as gold, he's trained brilliantly,” the Rangers manager said recently, underlining that attitude has never been in question.

He acknowledged the noise around the Belgian: plenty of conversations, plenty of talk, but a clear line in the sand.

“Until an offer comes in that the club need to consider, Nico just has to knuckle down and train,” McInnes added, stressing that if the window closed with Raskin still at Ibrox, he expected “brilliant service” once again.

That scenario now looks less likely, but not impossible. Until Raskin gives the green light, Rangers are still dealing in hypotheticals.

Replace or Reinforce From Within?

If Raskin does go, the next decision lands squarely on McInnes and the Rangers hierarchy: do they rush to replace him, or trust the work already done this summer?

The club have not been idle in midfield. Cammy Devlin, Dan Neil and Vanja Dragojevic have all arrived, adding legs, energy and depth in the centre of the pitch. On paper, Rangers have covered themselves.

Reality is rarely that neat.

Raskin offers a particular blend of aggression, tempo and forward thrust that is not easily replicated. Letting him leave would free up wages and potentially a fee that could be recycled, but with the Scottish deadline looming at 5pm on Thursday, any move would require sharp, decisive action.

Rangers are already chasing Celtic in the title race. Now, with the season barely started, they may also be chasing time.
