Power Struggle at ÖFB: Schöttel's Tenure in Jeopardy Amid Rangnick Rift
The nine-year tenure of Peter Schöttel at the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) is hanging by a thread, with Friday’s supervisory board meeting expected to decide his fate. What once looked like a stable, quietly successful era has been dragged into open conflict by a fractured relationship with head coach Ralf Rangnick.
According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, the sporting director has already been effectively sidelined by the federation. The bond between the two most influential figures in Austria’s sporting structure is being described as broken beyond repair.
The mood around the camp reflects it.
Former international striker and current Sky pundit Marc Janko has lifted the lid on the situation, suggesting that the turbulence has been brewing for some time. “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising,” he said, underlining how little the news shocks those close to the national team setup.
A Relationship That Stopped Working
The rift between Schöttel and Rangnick is not new. It has simply reached the point where both sides appear unable to continue.
“With Schöttel and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly,” Janko explained, summing up what many within the ÖFB had long suspected. The German coach has increasingly bypassed the sporting director in key matters.
“It is indeed the case that for some time Rangnick, in all the matters that are important to him, has not been doing that via Peter, but via other people,” Janko added.
That shift speaks volumes. Once the central figure in the sporting hierarchy, Schöttel has watched his influence erode as Rangnick has tightened his grip on decision-making. The power axis has moved – and it has moved away from him.
End of a Successful Chapter
If Friday confirms his departure, it will close one of the most successful chapters in recent ÖFB history.
Schöttel, now 59, joined the federation in 2017. He started as U19 coach and, within two months, was promoted to overall sporting director. From there, Austria’s national team quietly built a record of consistency on the big stage.
Under his leadership, Austria qualified for back-to-back European Championships. In both 2021 and 2024, the ÖFB side advanced to the last 16 – a level of continuity the country had long craved.
The crowning moment came last summer. After a 28-year absence from the World Cup finals, Austria finally returned to the global stage. They went out in the round of 32 to eventual world champions Spain, but the campaign marked a clear high point for the federation under Schöttel’s guidance.
Those achievements now risk being overshadowed by an internal power struggle.
Prödl Emerging as the Favourite
The ÖFB has yet to make any official announcement on a successor. Behind closed doors, though, a new name is already moving into pole position.
According to Krone, Sebastian Prödl has emerged as the internal favourite to take over. The former Bundesliga defender, who spent several years with Werder Bremen, has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024 and is held in high regard within the federation.
His advantage is not just his work with the academy and youth structures. Above all, Prödl is said to enjoy an “exceptionally good” relationship with Rangnick – precisely where Schöttel’s tenure has unravelled.
In a modern federation, alignment at the top often decides who stays and who goes. On Friday, the ÖFB will show which vision it believes in: the legacy-builder being pushed to the margins, or the coach whose influence is reshaping the entire sporting chain.
