Now both teams step into a different kind of test. Domestic perfection is one thing. Doing it under Champions League floodlights is another.

Porto’s injury list bites, but the XI still has teeth

Francesco Farioli has problems he would rather not have this early in the season. Porto come into this game with seven players unavailable, a significant chunk of the squad stripped away before a ball is kicked in Europe.

  • Vasco Sousa and Oscar Pietrzewski are both sidelined with leg injuries.

Ahead of them, the creative burden falls on the trio behind the striker, with Pepe offering the kind of direct threat and unpredictability that can unsettle even the most structured defence.

At home, under pressure, Porto usually lean into the chaos. This XI is built to do exactly that.

City’s depth tested, but Haaland leads the charge

Maresca doesn’t have a full deck either. Manchester City travel without Jeremy Doku and Nico O’Reilly, two players who give the Italian coach different attacking profiles and options between the lines.

Doku is out with a calf injury, depriving City of one of their purest one-on-one threats. O’Reilly is nursing a back issue. The timeline on the latter is more encouraging. Speaking before the match, Maresca confirmed that O’Reilly could be back in time for the derby against Manchester United on Sunday, Sept. 13, but admitted Doku’s situation is less clear.

“Nico probably yes; Jeremy, we’re not sure yet. We need to wait,” he said.

Even with those absences, City’s projected XI carries a familiar weight.

Marc Guéhi brings composure alongside him, with Rayan Ait-Nouri offering thrust from the left. The midfield pairing of Anderson and Bouaddi will be asked to control the tempo, protect the defence, and feed the creative line.

Ahead of them, the blend is intriguing. Antoine Semenyo’s direct running, Rayan Cherki’s flair, Phil Foden’s intelligence between the lines. And then Haaland, the fixed point around which everything else orbits. Give him service, and the numbers tend to follow.

City may be missing Doku’s raw acceleration, but they do not arrive short of ways to hurt Porto.
