Philippe Coutinho Joins Santos: A Long-Awaited Reunion with Neymar
Philippe Coutinho is back in Brazil and, at long last, under the same club roof as Neymar – but in a way nobody quite imagined a decade ago.
Santos confirmed on Monday that Coutinho has joined the club on a deal until the end of the season, reuniting the former Brazil teammates at Vila Belmiro and injecting a jolt of star power into their campaign.
A reunion years in the making
For years, Coutinho and Neymar have been bracketed together as part of the same golden generation, two gifted playmakers who carried the hopes of a country. They dazzled for Brazil, shared dressing rooms on international duty, and should, on paper, have lit up Europe together.
They never did.
Neymar left Barcelona for Paris St Germain in August 2017. Coutinho arrived at Camp Nou in January 2018, fresh from a five-year spell at Liverpool where he had evolved from promising youngster into one of the Premier League’s most feared attacking midfielders. By the time he helped Barcelona to two LaLiga titles, Neymar was long gone.
So the club link-up that felt inevitable in Europe has finally landed back home, on Brazilian soil, and in the white of Santos.
“If it’s a dream…”
Santos marked Coutinho’s arrival with a slick video, the kind that carries more weight when the faces are this familiar. The footage showed the 32-year-old walking into the dressing room, taking in his new surroundings, before Neymar stepped forward to greet him.
“If it’s a dream, I don’t want to wake up,” Neymar told Coutinho, a line that underlined the sense of nostalgia and renewed ambition around the club.
For all their shared history with the national team, this is the first time the pair will play together at club level. It is a twist that gives Santos a storyline few in the league can match.
Back to where it all began – almost
Coutinho’s return to Brazil has been a winding road. The playmaker, who last featured for Brazil in March 2022, went back to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in 2024, a move framed as a homecoming and a chance to reset his career. That stint ended in February this year, leaving his next step uncertain.
Santos have provided the answer.
Neymar, now 34, made his own emotional return to Santos last year, the club where he first exploded onto the global stage. After Brazil’s World Cup exit in July, he announced his international retirement, closing one chapter while keeping the door open at club level.
Now the two men, who once carried the weight of the Seleção together, are attempting to write a new story in the Brazilian top flight. One is back at the club that shaped him; the other is searching for rhythm and joy again in a league that knows his name and his game.
The question now is simple and tantalising: how much magic do Coutinho and Neymar still have left to share in the same shirt?
