An unbeaten giant finally tripped, a scoring record tumbled, and the title race narrowed to a knife’s edge. Matchweek 20 in the NWSL did not drift by quietly.
Denver Summit FC, the league’s newcomers, chose their moment to announce themselves. They walked straight into Gotham FC’s 10-game unbeaten run and tore it up, handing the leaders a defeat that reverberates far beyond a single weekend. Gotham had looked almost untouchable for weeks; Denver made them look human.
North Carolina Courage
If that was the shock, the spectacle came from North Carolina.
The North Carolina Courage dismantled the Chicago Stars in a six-goal showcase that felt like a statement to the rest of the league. At the heart of it all, Ashley Sanchez. Providence Park
On the other side of the country, Providence Park staged its own subplot.
Two-thirds of ‘Triple Espresso’ were back on the same pitch, but no longer on the same side. Trinity Rodman in the colors of the Washington Spirit. Sophia Wilson lining up for the Portland Thorns. Old chemistry, new stakes.
Rodman and the Spirit left with the points and the bragging rights. A 2-1 win in Portland pushed Washington to within two points of first-place Gotham, turning what once looked like a comfortable lead into a genuine scrap at the summit. The Thorns, spurred on by Wilson, pushed, but the Spirit held their nerve and their line. In a season defined by fine margins, this felt like one of those results that lingers.
Boston Legacy
The shocks did not stop there.
Boston Legacy, fighting to carve out their own identity in this crowded field, walked into their clash with the Utah Royals and came away with a 2-1 upset. It was the kind of result that jolts a dressing room—one team emboldened, the other suddenly aware that nothing is guaranteed in the run-in.
Seattle Reign
Then came Seattle.
The Seattle Reign delivered another twist, shutting out the San Diego Wave 1-0 and dragging the high-flying Californians back into the pack. One goal was enough, one clean sheet enough, to reshape the table’s upper tier.
By the final whistle of the weekend, the standings told the story. The Royals, Courage and Wave all locked on 39 points, shoulder to shoulder in third, with Gotham still on top but no longer cruising, and the Spirit closing fast.
