Nick Woltemade’s future at Newcastle United is edging towards a decision, and his brief cameo in north London may have come at exactly the right time.
The German forward, used sparingly since his big-money move to Tyneside, came off the bench in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur and immediately left a mark. Introduced in the 71st minute alongside Sean Steur, Woltemade attacked Lewis Hall’s corner, directing a clever header back across goal for Yoane Wissa to finish the move and seal the result. One touch, one contribution, one reminder.
Clubs across Europe were already circling. Now the list is growing.
Dortmund forced back into the market
In Germany, the situation has changed sharply. Borussia Dortmund, already weighing up their attacking options this summer, have been jolted into action by a serious ACL injury to Giannis Konstantelias, a summer signing whose setback was confirmed over the weekend.
BILD reports that the blow has pushed Dortmund towards the market again, with Woltemade emerging as one of the leading candidates to fill the gap in the final days of the window. Journalists Michel Schröer, Jörg Weiler and Yannick Hüber describe the Newcastle striker as a “prominent name” under consideration at the Westfalenstadion.
The interest did not appear from nowhere. Dortmund had already been linked with the 24-year-old earlier in the summer and, according to the same report, made initial contact weeks ago. A permanent deal, though, looks complicated. Newcastle’s valuation and Dortmund’s financial framework are not an easy fit, which makes a loan the realistic route if BVB decide to move.
A record signing on the move?
Newcastle, for their part, are not exactly closing the door.
TalkSPORT reported last week that the club are actively looking to offload their £69 million (€80 million) record signing, seeking a solution that works both for their squad and their balance sheet. The market has responded. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Napoli have already contacted Newcastle to explore a loan deal, while TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has linked Woltemade with a possible return to Stuttgart. RB Leipzig are also credited with interest, adding another Bundesliga option to the mix.
So while Dortmund weigh up their response to Konstantelias’ injury, Woltemade’s name sits on more than one shortlist.
Newcastle’s moving pieces
On Tyneside, everything is interconnected. Woltemade’s fate is tied closely to Newcastle’s own attacking rebuild.
The club is closing in on an agreement with Lille for Matias Fernandez-Pardo, a move that would reshape the forward line and potentially push Woltemade further down the pecking order. Newcastle have also explored other attacking options, leaving the German in a familiar position: waiting, watching, and wondering where his minutes will come from.
For now, BILD is clear on one point: Dortmund are considering Woltemade, but have not yet submitted a bid. No late scramble, no formal offer on the table. Not yet. The need, however, is real. Konstantelias’ injury has created a hole in BVB’s attack, and a loan would offer a low-risk, high-upside fix for the Bundesliga club while giving Newcastle a clean exit route if their incoming business lands in time.
Woltemade has already shown he can change a game in a matter of moments. The question now is simple: will he be doing that in black and white on Tyneside, or in black and yellow in front of the Yellow Wall?
