Manchester United's Urgent Left-Back Search: David Raum on the Radar
Manchester United have spent the summer tearing up and rebuilding their midfield. Around £150m has gone on Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The spine looks different. The problem sits wider.
Left-back remains a glaring hole.
Luke Shaw’s fitness record means he cannot be the sole pillar on that side, and the club’s preferred solution, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, is effectively locked away for this window. There is “buy-in” from the player, but no deal to be done. The door is shut for now.
So United have gone back to the market. And one name keeps circling back: David Raum.
Raum on the radar – but United hesitate
BILD, via Sport Witness, report that the RB Leipzig defender sits firmly on United’s left-back shortlist. On paper, he fits the brief. The 28-year-old is established, aggressive in the final third and coming off a productive Bundesliga campaign, with ten goal involvements from full-back.
He is also entering the final year of his contract. That changes everything.
Leipzig would like around €40m for Raum, a figure that reflects his status and output. They also know the clock is ticking. With his deal running down, the German club accept they may have to compromise on the fee.
Raum himself has already acknowledged the situation. Speaking earlier this week, he made it clear interest is real and growing.
“I’m now heading into the final year of my contract,” he said. “I don’t need to lie about the fact that inquiries are coming in – that’s obviously to be expected. But as things stand, I’m looking forward to the season with Leipzig.”
So the door is ajar, but not wide open. Leipzig are listening. Raum is aware. United are watching.
And yet, they stall.
The report out of Germany describes United as “dithering” over whether to commit what is seen as a “relatively large sum” on a player who turns 29 this season. The concern is clear: pay big now for a ready-made solution, or hold out for a younger option with a higher ceiling and potential resale value.
Time, though, is not dithering with them.
Romano: United want a “guarantee” at left-back
With the window heading into its final days, the pressure is rising. Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, made it plain that United are still actively working on a left-back signing and expects late movement.
“I think it could be busy for Man Utd in this final four or five days of the window because I can guarantee to you that Manchester United are still looking for a solution at left-back,” he said. “So Man Utd are working to sign a new left-back.”
The profile is telling. United have already looked at Alejandro Balde, holding talks with Jorge Mendes last week, but quickly walked away from a deal that would have been prohibitive on both transfer fee and salary.
“Transfer fee, salary, too expensive. United are not going to do that, at least for now,” Romano explained.
So the club are pivoting. Not towards a superstar, but towards reliability.
Romano pointed back to the Sergio Reguilon loan from Tottenham as a template – not the player himself, but the type: an experienced, international left-back who can step straight into the squad, raise the floor of the position and offer real competition without swallowing the entire budget.
“Obviously I’m not saying Reguilon but that kind of player, experienced left-back who can provide competition, who can also be an international profile,” he said. “So Manchester United are exploring this kind of options. So left-back is expected to be an area where Man Utd want to improve before the deadline. I expect them to sign there.”
Raum fits that description almost perfectly. Proven at a high level. Attacking output. International experience. Contract situation that invites negotiation.
The question is whether United are prepared to pay for “almost a guarantee” at 28, or whether the search swings back towards a younger, less polished defender with room to grow.
The clock will decide for them soon enough.
