Manchester United’s hunt for a centre-forward has taken a late twist, with Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth emerging as a serious option in the final days of the window.
Intermediaries have offered the Norway international to United, and the club are now weighing up whether the 30-year-old fits the profile they want to slot in alongside Benjamin Sesko before Tuesday’s deadline.
A familiar face for the Premier League – and for Haaland
Sorloth is no stranger to English football. His previous spell at Crystal Palace never truly caught fire, but his game has grown since then, and his form at Atletico has put him back on the radar of top clubs.
Physically imposing, dominant in the air and comfortable operating as a traditional No.9, he ticks several of the boxes United are targeting. With 175 career goals in 475 appearances, he brings a level of experience and penalty-box nous that appeals to Michael Carrick and his recruitment team.
He is also open to the move. A return to the Premier League is something Sorloth would welcome, and the prospect of joining his close friend Erling Haaland in the same city adds a neat subplot to any potential deal.
United’s brief: a true alternative to Sesko
United’s need is clear. Joshua Zirkzee has been allowed to join Fiorentina, leaving Sesko as the undisputed focal point of the attack. Carrick and the hierarchy do not want a stop-gap or a vanity signing; they want a genuine central option who can complement, compete with and occasionally relieve the Slovenian.
Sources indicate that if United do bring in another striker, it will only be for a player who offers a clear tactical alternative to Sesko. Sorloth, with his size, aerial strength and experience at the highest level, fits that remit more than most.
The club have cast the net wide. Talks have taken place with Crystal Palace over Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr, though neither deal is straightforward. Younger forwards have also been discussed, including Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic, Hoffenheim’s Fisnik Asllani and RB Leipzig’s Conrad Harder.
Names are on the list. Very few, though, match Sorloth’s blend of experience, physicality and immediate readiness for Premier League intensity.
Atletico’s stance and the Jonathan David domino
Atletico are not closing the door. They are prepared to let Sorloth leave – but only on their terms, and only once a replacement is lined up.
Their plan is to keep Julian Alvarez, yet Diego Simeone still wants another striker through the door. Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and former Lille forward Jonathan David are among the options being studied as Atletico weigh how to reshape their attack.
Juventus are also circling around David, exploring a complex potential deal that could involve Sorloth and Nico Gonzalez as part of an exchange. Those negotiations are proving difficult to piece together, and the longer they drag on, the more they influence Sorloth’s situation.
There is another twist. David himself has been offered to Manchester United, with the Old Trafford club now assessing whether the Canada international might be a different kind of answer to their attacking question.
A window on a knife-edge
United’s striker search has become a late-window balancing act. Sorloth has moved firmly onto their radar as an experienced, plug-and-play option whose willingness to return to England could accelerate talks if the club decide to move.
Yet the message from inside Old Trafford is consistent: they will not sign a forward just to fill a shirt. If the right profile does not become available at the right price, there is a real chance United walk away and go into the season with Sesko as the clear spearhead.
