Liverpool in Talks with Valencia for Harvey Elliott Loan Move

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the clock ticks towards Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.

The 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several clubs throughout the summer, is now the subject of advanced discussions with the La Liga side, who are pushing to get a deal done before the 11pm cut-off on September 1.

Valencia push for Elliott as deadline looms

Valencia are understood to be at the front of the queue and have already outlined their vision for Elliott’s role at Mestalla. The midfielder is believed to have spoken directly with los Che boss Carlos Corberan about how he would be used in Spain, with the prospect of regular minutes a key part of the conversation.

Any agreement is expected to be a straight loan, but it could open the door to a Liverpool contract extension designed to protect the value of a player whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028.

For Liverpool, it is a balancing act: maintain Elliott’s market worth, but finally get him the game time that has been missing from his career over the last 12 months.

On the fringes at Anfield and Villa

Elliott has not made a match-day squad under new head coach Andoni Iraola so far this season. His situation follows a frustrating spell at Aston Villa last term, where he spent most of the campaign on the periphery.

He did make one notable contribution for Liverpool last season: a late appearance in the 3-2 win at Newcastle a year ago. That cameo had major implications. Having already played for two clubs, it prevented him from moving again in the January window.

Villa, meanwhile, were careful. Determined not to trigger an obligation-to-buy clause, they ensured Elliott did not reach the 10-game threshold that would have forced a permanent £35m transfer. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott watched much of it from the sidelines, a fringe figure as others seized the spotlight.

Uncertain future, clear dilemma

Back at Liverpool for the pre-season tour of the United States, Elliott cut a reflective figure. Speaking in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30, he admitted he was wrestling with his next move.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions," he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

Those words now frame the moment. The intel has arrived. Valencia are at the table.

Liverpool had been expecting contact from the Spanish club before the weekend. That call has come, and talks over a loan are now under way as the window enters its final stretch.

Elliott joined Liverpool from Fulham in the summer of 2019, signing for the club he grew up supporting. Since then, he has made 149 appearances, a tally that speaks to both his early breakthrough and the stop-start nature of his development.
