Kylian Mbappé is used to being turned into an icon. This time, he’s drawing a line.

The Real Madrid and France forward has condemned a viral AI-generated meme that pastes his face onto the body of a dictator, calling it a sign of “a lack of political and human awareness”.

The image has circulated widely on social media, often deployed by fans to underline how Mbappé dominates matches or wields influence at club level. The joke, in their eyes, is that he rules the pitch – and sometimes the dressing room – like an autocrat.

Mbappé understands why some people laugh. He just refuses to pretend it’s harmless.

Speaking to France Football, he acknowledged the split reaction even within himself.

“There’s a funny side to it because you can sense that, for some people, it’s good natured,” he said. Then he pushed back hard. The reference point matters.

“Then there’s a side that’s a bit less funny, because we know the damage people like that have caused throughout history.

“Being compared to people who murder others, or who have made millions upon millions of people miserable... I don’t think I’ve done that in my life.

“On one hand, I know it’s done lightheartedly and doesn’t go that far, but it sometimes reveals a lack of political and human awareness among people.”

In an era where players are relentlessly memed, edited and repackaged by algorithms, Mbappé’s comments cut against the usual shrug-it-off response. He isn’t raging at the internet, but he is asking where the line is when real-world atrocities become shorthand for sporting dominance.

The forward also touched on the “Mobut” nickname that surfaced during the 2026 World Cup, when France team-mate Ousmane Dembélé jokingly used it around the camp. The moniker stems from Mobutu Sese Seko, the dictator who ruled the Democratic Republic of Congo, then Zaire, for three decades.

Here, Mbappé softened. The dressing room, he suggested, is not the same as the timeline.

“Ousmane, that’s a different thing. He took that from social media. He’s just having a laugh,” Mbappé said.
