Justin Arana Joins Gilas as Tamayo Replacement Against Iran

Justin Arana steps into the spotlight on Sunday as he officially joins Gilas Pilipinas for its clash against Iran in the fourth window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Converge big man has been activated to replace Carl Tamayo, who hurt his ankle during the Nationals’ nail-biting 82-81 win over Jordan in their opening game of the window. Tamayo’s setback opened the door; Arana now walks through it.

This will be Arana’s first official game in a Gilas jersey. He had already been part of the pool before preparations began for this window, but now the call is real, the stakes higher, the moment bigger.

He joins a towering frontline that suddenly looks even deeper. Kai Sotto, June Mar Fajardo and AJ Edu anchor the middle, with Justine Baltazar and Troy Rosario adding length and mobility in the paint. Arana’s arrival gives coach more size, fouls to give, and a fresh interior presence against an Iranian side that loves to pound the ball inside.

On the wings, Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos and Chris Newsome provide versatility and scoring, each capable of sliding between roles depending on matchups. At the controls, Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez and Juan Gomez de Liaño will share point guard duties, blending playmaking, pressure defense and downhill attacks.

Across the floor stands an Iran squad stung by a 93-91 defeat to New Zealand in its first outing of the window. A proud program with a history of physical, disciplined basketball, Iran will come in desperate to avoid back-to-back losses.
