Julian Alvarez has not set foot on Atletico Madrid’s training pitch since being told, bluntly and privately, that the club will not sell him to Barcelona. For a player who has made his preference clear, the message could hardly have been more brutal.
Right now, his only escape route appears to run through north London.
Barca door slammed shut
Sources have told BBC Sport that Atletico informed Alvarez and his advisors earlier this week that they will not enter negotiations with Barcelona over the Argentina international. No public grandstanding, no drawn-out saga behind the scenes – just a firm refusal delivered directly to the player’s camp.
The reaction has been immediate. The 26-year-old has missed two consecutive training sessions, citing illness. On paper, it’s a simple explanation. In the wider context, it feels like a symptom of a standoff that is hardening by the day.
Atletico then took the unusual step of backing up their private stance with public declarations. Twice in 24 hours, the club released statements underlining that Alvarez will not be granted his wish to join Barca in the coming days.
“There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”
On Thursday, the board went even further, announcing that its members had “unanimously expressed their absolute support” for the decision not to negotiate with FC Barcelona over the striker’s transfer.
If there was any doubt about Atletico’s position, it has been systematically removed.
Arsenal emerge as the only route out
Yet this is not a blanket refusal to sell. Far from it.
Atletico are open to doing business with Arsenal and have already held direct talks with the Premier League champions over what would be one of the defining transfers of the summer window.
Atleti director Mateu Alemany was in London last week, where he met Arsenal counterparts and made the club’s demands plain: a fee of 150m euros (£128m). No discounts, no cut-price compromise. If Alvarez is to leave, it will be on Atletico’s terms.
Mikel Arteta is pushing hard. He wants Alvarez this month, views him as a major piece in Arsenal’s next evolution, and has made that clear within the club. Yet the manager’s ambition is colliding with the player’s own. Alvarez’s determination to join Barcelona has stalled Arsenal’s pursuit, leaving the deal balanced on the striker’s willingness to change course.
Even so, talks between Atletico and Arsenal over a club-to-club agreement have been described as positive. The framework is there. The numbers are on the table. The path is laid out.
Now it comes down to the one element nobody else can control.
If Alvarez gives Arsenal the green light in the coming days, the expectation is that the transfer could move quickly. Atletico are ready. Arsenal are ready. Barcelona, for all their desire, are locked out.
The question is whether Julian Alvarez is prepared to walk through the only door that’s still open.
