Julian Alvarez Transfer Saga: Atletico Madrid Slams Barcelona Door

Julian Alvarez has not set foot on Atletico Madrid’s training pitch since being told, in no uncertain terms, that his Barcelona dream is dead. If he wants out, the escape route runs through north London.

Barca door slammed shut

Earlier this week, Atletico informed Alvarez and his representatives in private that they would not enter negotiations with Barcelona for the Argentina forward. The message was blunt: no talks, no deal, no way.

The fallout was immediate. Alvarez, 26, has missed two consecutive training sessions, officially citing illness. His absence has only poured fuel on a transfer saga already running hot.

Inside 24 hours, Atletico twice went public to harden their stance. The first statement was a direct response to Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who had insisted the Catalan club still wanted to sign Alvarez. Atletico’s reply cut through the noise: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”

The board then moved as one. In a second statement on Thursday, Atletico said their directors had “unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club's decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona.” No ambiguity. No softening of the line. Barcelona are out.

Arsenal’s opening

While one door slams, another creaks open. Atletico are willing to sell Alvarez – just not to Barcelona. Arsenal, though, are a different story.

Talks have already taken place between Atletico and the Premier League champions. Atleti director Mateu Alemany was in London last week and met Arsenal officials, making clear the price: 150m euros (£128m). It would be one of the biggest transfers of the summer, and Arsenal know it.

Mikel Arteta wants Alvarez this month. Badly. The manager sees him as a marquee addition to an already title-winning squad, a forward who can stretch defences and decide tight games. But there is a problem Arsenal cannot control: Alvarez’s heart is set on Barcelona.

That preference has stalled Arsenal’s push. The London club are ready, Atletico are willing, yet the player has been looking the other way.

A deal waiting for the green light

Even so, the conversations between Atletico and Arsenal have been described as positive. The framework is there. The fee is clear. The pathway is mapped out.

All that’s missing is Alvarez himself.

If the striker accepts that Barcelona is no longer an option and gives Arsenal the green light in the coming days, the move is expected to accelerate quickly. The clubs are aligned; the negotiations, at least between them, are not the issue.

For now, Alvarez remains away from training, officially unwell, caught between the club that won’t sell him to his first choice and the club ready to make him one of the signings of the summer.

Atletico have drawn their line. Barcelona have been shut out. Arsenal are waiting. The next decision belongs to Julian Alvarez alone.
