Joe Bursik Returns to AFC Wimbledon on Season-Long Loan
AFC Wimbledon have brought goalkeeper Joe Bursik back to Plough Lane, securing the 26-year-old on loan from Championship side Portsmouth for the rest of the season.
For Bursik, it is more than a routine move. He first walked through the doors of Wimbledon’s academy as an eight-year-old, learning his trade with the club before leaving for Stoke City at 16. Now he returns as a seasoned professional, with Championship experience and a career that has already taken in a string of demanding loan spells.
His most eye-catching spell came at Stoke, where he kept seven clean sheets in 16 Championship appearances during the 2020-21 campaign. That run underlined his potential as a modern goalkeeper: agile, confident with the ball at his feet, and capable of handling the pressure of a promotion-chasing division.
Stoke then sent him out to Telford, Accrington, Doncaster and Peterborough, each move adding a layer of resilience and game craft. The route was not glamorous, but it was unforgiving and real – the kind of education that tends to show when a keeper walks into a new dressing room.
Bursik signed for Portsmouth in September 2025 and has since made 10 league appearances for Pompey. He also started in their FA Cup third-round tie against Arsenal at Fratton Park, a 4-1 defeat that still offered him a stage against elite opposition and a reminder of the levels he wants to reach again.
Now comes a different kind of test. Wimbledon get a goalkeeper who knows the club’s badge from childhood, but arrives with the scars and sharpness of the professional game. For a side looking to steady themselves and push upwards, that blend of familiarity and experience could be exactly what they need between the posts as the season reaches its decisive stretch.
