Enzo Fernández’s Chelsea story has lurched into a new, uneasy chapter.
On a night when fringe players and hopefuls fought for minutes in the EFL Cup against Luton, one of Stamford Bridge’s marquee names was nowhere to be seen. Xabi Alonso did not include the Argentina international in his matchday squad, a decision that lands differently when Manchester City are weighing up a move before the transfer window closes.
This was not a quiet omission. Spanish outlet Marca underlined that Fernández, who made clear before the summer that he wanted to leave Chelsea, missed out entirely. In England, the noise grew: City are considering a bid. The timing could hardly be sharper.
Alonso, though, pushed back against any suggestion of disciplinary issues or a transfer-driven call. He painted it as a straight football decision.
“It was simply about today’s match,” he said after the win over Luton, cutting off the speculation line by line. Rotation, roles, and the specific demands of the tie shaped his thinking, he explained. Other players needed minutes. Other profiles suited the game.
Pressed on when he actually decided to leave Fernández out, Alonso did not flinch. “Wednesday evening. It’s a decision I made.” No committee. No late phone call. His choice.
The coach also went out of his way to defend the midfielder’s conduct. Fernández, he stressed, remains “extremely professional,” a player who trains well and has not downed tools despite his desire to move on. Inside Cobham, Alonso suggested, there is no drama.
Yet outside, the context refuses to sit quietly. A World Cup winner, signed for a huge fee and expected to be a pillar of Chelsea’s rebuild, is suddenly reduced to a tactical omission while the champions of England assess their options.
Alonso did leave one door conspicuously open. Sunday brings Brighton to Stamford Bridge in the league, and Fernández is very much in that conversation.
“Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that,” Alonso said. “Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday.”
That “we’ll see” now carries real weight. Is this just rotation in a long season, or the first visible crack before a late-window move to Manchester City? Chelsea’s next team sheet will say plenty.
