Edvin Austbø Joins West Ham United on Four-Year Deal
Edvin Austbø has walked into London Stadium with a long-term bet placed firmly on his shoulders and his future. The Norwegian forward has signed a four-year deal with West Ham United, with an option for a further year, and will wear the No35 shirt as the club chases a return to the Premier League.
For Austbø, 21, the move is as much about emotion as ambition.
“It feels really good to be a Hammer,” he said, clearly swept up in the moment. “Ever since I knew about the interest, I wanted to come here and have butterflies and am really looking forward to start playing for this amazing club.”
This is not a short-term punt. West Ham have committed to a player they believe can grow with the club, and help drag it back to the top tier. Promotion is the target, and Austbø is not shying away from that expectation.
“Obviously, the ambitions of the club are big and it's also for me as a player,” he added, tying his own development directly to West Ham’s climb.
The move has been shaped by conversations behind the scenes. Austbø pointed to his talks with head coach Nuno and Director of Player Recruitment Nils Koppen as decisive.
“The talks I had with Nuno and Nils Koppen were amazing and I just felt from the start that this was a good match and that I really wanted to come here.”
For Koppen, this is the culmination of a long scouting job rather than a late scramble.
“Edvin is a player we have tracked closely for some time and we are very happy to bring him to West Ham United,” he said. “He has made very impressive progress and built strong experience in Norway, and there has been a lot of interest in him across Europe.”
That interest did not deter West Ham. It sharpened their conviction.
“We believe he has the right attributes, strengths and potential to be successful in English football. He is a quick, energetic and intelligent player, who will bring another positive option to our attacking profile,” Koppen explained.
Austbø arrives with the mindset of someone stepping into a league he has watched from afar for most of his life.
“I watched English football on TV when I was a little kid. Everyone in Norway knows West Ham. It's such a big club and a club that belongs on the highest level in England.”
This is the romantic pull of English football meeting the hard edge of a promotion fight. West Ham need goals, energy and belief. Austbø needs a stage big enough to match his ambition.
Koppen is confident the club can provide the platform and the support.
