Djed Spence steps onto the grass at last. One month after swapping Tottenham Hotspur for Inter in a €35m move, the England defender has finally joined full training on the pitch – but his San Siro bow is still likely to be kept on ice.
First steps in Nerazzurri colours
Club photographers captured Spence working with his new teammates on Thursday, with Italian outlets confirming it was his first session “out on the grass” since signing. Until now, the 26-year-old’s work had been limited to indoor and individual programmes.
It marks an important milestone. This is the first time the England international has trained outside with Inter since completing his summer transfer, a deal that was meant to add power and pace to Simone Inzaghi’s flanks.
Spence arrived later than most. After England’s run to the World Cup semi-final, Inter granted him an extended break, and La Gazzetta dello Sport report that he returned carrying a minor physical issue. That setback cost him the final stretch of pre-season and, with it, the chance to build rhythm alongside his new teammates.
The contrast is obvious. Fellow England World Cup squad member John Stones has already pulled on the Nerazzurri shirt three times since his own move to San Siro earlier in the summer. Spence, by comparison, has so far been limited to watching from the sidelines and walking the touchline before kick-off.
Debut on hold
Inter face Udinese at San Siro on Monday night, a fixture that might once have looked like a natural moment for a big-money signing to be unveiled to the home crowd. He still has three days of work before that game comes around.
Yet the message from inside the club is clear: there will be no rush.
SportMediaset report that Inter’s hierarchy prefer caution to spectacle at this stage, with no intention of forcing Spence back into competitive action before his body is fully ready. The calendar offers them a convenient safety net.
The international break looms. And it is the first match after that pause – at home to Parma on October 10 – that has been quietly ringed in red. According to the same report, that date has been pencilled in as the ideal window for Spence’s debut.
For now, the new signing must settle for the sound of studs on training-ground turf rather than the roar of a packed San Siro. The wait goes on – but so does the expectation.
