David McDermott, Former Walsall and York Winger, Dies at 38
English football is mourning the death of former Walsall, York City and Kidderminster Harriers winger David McDermott, who has died aged 38.
A product of Walsall’s youth system, McDermott broke through with the fearlessness that marks out real prospects. In 2004, at just 16, he became the Saddlers’ youngest ever debutant, a milestone that underlined how highly he was regarded at Bescot.
He left Walsall in 2008 and dropped into non-league with Kidderminster Harriers, where he became a regular part of the side. Over two seasons with the Reds, he made 54 appearances and scored twice, offering width and work-rate in a competitive Conference set-up.
York City came next. McDermott joined the Minstermen and featured 21 times, adding depth to a squad pushing to re-establish itself. His career then took him across the non-league map of the Midlands and beyond, with spells at AFC Telford United, Stourbridge, Rushall Olympic and Worcester City.
Across those clubs, he built the kind of career that rarely makes headlines but quietly stitches itself into the fabric of the lower leagues – a winger who came through early, kept going, and left his mark in dressing rooms and on terraces that remember their own.
