Chelsea Faces Key Training Absences with Pedro, James, and Caicedo Out
Chelsea’s preparations for Friday night have been jolted by the sight of three key names missing from the main training group at Cobham.
Pedro, the Brazilian forward who has carried much of Chelsea’s attacking threat this season, was nowhere to be seen during the open portion of Tuesday’s session, according to Sky Sports journalist James Savundra. For a side still trying to find rhythm under Alonso, that is no small detail.
Pedro has been Chelsea’s sharpest edge so far: three goals, three assists, just five appearances. He dragged them out of trouble again at the weekend, stepping up with a late equaliser to salvage a point against Hull City. When a player in that kind of form suddenly disappears from training, alarm bells ring quickly.
Reece James missing, concern rising
If Pedro’s absence raised eyebrows, Reece James’ no-show pushed them higher.
The club captain has been at the heart of Alonso’s tactical reshuffle, operating in central midfield and setting the tempo. He has completed the full 90 minutes in three of Chelsea’s four league games, looking increasingly comfortable in the role.
There was no obvious sign of trouble against Hull. James finished the match, no limp, no lengthy treatment, no hint that anything was amiss. To then be absent from the main group on Tuesday turns a routine training report into a worrying subplot for Chelsea’s staff and supporters alike.
Caicedo still on hold
Moises Caicedo’s situation is different. His absence, while frustrating, did not come out of the blue.
The Ecuador international has yet to start a match this season, his campaign shredded by a persistent physical issue that simply will not clear. He missed the opening weekend against Fulham, then managed just a 14‑minute cameo in the wild 4-3 win over Brighton before the problem flared again. That relapse ruled him out of subsequent fixtures against Arsenal and Leeds.
Alonso had already tried to lower expectations ahead of this week. Speaking last week about the possibility of Caicedo featuring on Friday, the Chelsea boss made it clear he would not be rushed.
“Not yet, we’ll see for Brentford,” he said in his pre‑match press conference, underlining a cautious stance. He doubled down on the need for restraint, stressing that Chelsea are “not at a moment to take risks with him. Not yet; we are not yet.”
For a 24‑year‑old midfielder signed to anchor the project, it has been a stuttering, stop‑start beginning.
Light among the shadows
The session was not all bad news.
Summer signings Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson both trained fully with the squad, a welcome sight for Alonso and his staff. Their integration has been a slow burn, but Tuesday’s involvement moves them closer to long‑awaited debuts in Chelsea blue.
With Pedro, James and Caicedo all sidelined from the main group, those fresh legs could soon move from intriguing options on paper to vital pieces on the pitch.
